Writing a Real Estate Blog

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

A blog can be a great way of getting yourself and your real estate business out into the local eye. Make sure that you know what your readers want. Show your human side with your feelings about topics, with humor, and with your knowledge of your topics. Remember you are marketing yourself and your expertise as a real estate agent.

Use keywords when you write. Your blog is submitted to various online search engines automatically, plus you also have your blog’s own search engine. Choose key words and phrases that are search engine optimized in your writing and be sure that you include the correct words in your headline and body text. This is SEO and it will bring up your blog if any of these words are typed in to a search engine.

Blogging can be effortless if you like to write about things. Blogging these days is done more for business purposes than as a hobby, so you have to like the subject that you blog about and also be very knowledgeable about it. You also have to consider whether your posts will be of interest to others.

Show your feelings and share your opinions about the topics that you are passionate about. That shows your human side to your readers and builds a relationship with them which is something that they want and will keep them coming back.

Keep your blog writing short, informative, and easy to understand. The average blog visitor spends between 2-3 minutes viewing a site. Keep articles on point and not over 300-500 words. Be sure the information is useful for the type of visitor that will be reading your blog. If you want repeat visitors it is important to capture their interest.

The title of your article should catch your reader right away. Use the first line of your article to ask a question that will require your reader to answer, thus also read the rest of your article. You want to have interesting content. It should be up to date and pertinent to the issues of real estate in today’s market. This will make your readers want to come back.

Blogs only succeed because they have fresh, new content on a regular basis. If you post sporadically, viewers will lose interest in you and your blog. If, however, you post regularly, viewers will return to learn more about what you have to say.

If you can’t commit to a post a day, consider posting two or three times a week and stick to regular days so your viewers know when to check back for updates. For instance, post on Mondays and Thursdays or Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

In the end, your real estate blog will only be as successful as the time you put into it.

A Few Ideas for Your Successful Real Estate Blog

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

In an industry where fast results are preferred and successful people usually have more client turnover, those who take time to document the market and offer their thoughts will likely always be in the minority, and stand out as a result. But blogging’s lack of trendiness hasn’t stopped it from evolving – new strategies are constantly appearing, and real estate blogs offer some of the best ideas.

The first step in making your blog popular is knowing who’s likely to read it, and writing for those people. For example, will you focus on the same local buyers and sellers you do business with every day, or will you write to a national audience on a particular topic? One way to figure this out is to look at what you talk about with clients on a daily basis, and see if it’s transferable to a blog. Some of the best-read real estate blogs simply document a Realtor’s daily routine, providing insight and entertaining anecdotes along the way. Real estate blogs that focus on a city or metro area, occasionally covering topics outside the buying and selling of property, are also popular – many of these aren’t even written by agents, but good writers who understand how their audience works.

A good strategy here is to be the first to write about topics when they become blog-worthy, and make sure your copy is original – if you’re an expert in the field you blog about, so much the better. It’s also a good idea to get comfortable with people commenting on your blog. Whether the comments about what you’ve written are positive or negative, a healthy base of commenter’s helps establish you as the central discussion point for your topic. It can also be a way to extend your stories, and generate ideas for future blog posts.

Instead of trying to be the source for all information and resources on a particular topic, you should link elsewhere when a more in-depth explanation is required. This allows readers to choose when they want more information, or just the basic facts and witty insight provided by your blog. Outbound links also promote the idea that you’ve included everything essential, while supplementary information can be found elsewhere. Finally, it’s important to keep in mind the advantages of continuity in your blog. Many of the best blogs have been up for years with the same look and writing style. Readers go back to these blogs looking for a particular angle and coverage niche, and they always find it.
